Fort Indiantown Gap is now home to an eighties-era memorial erected to honor the submariners lost during World War Two. The monument had formerly been in Harrisburg’s Riverfront Park.
The monument honors the 53 submarines and 3,505 men lost at sea during that conflict. Yesterday Fort Indiantown Gap hosted a ceremony recognizing the monument in its new home.
Keystone Base had threatened to take the monument elsewhere in 2017, citing bureaucratic hurdles encountered while arranging an annual event the submarine veterans group created to honor the seamen. Organizers said, “Indiantown Gap National Cemetery was interested and exceptionally helpful in guiding the addition of the monument to their grounds.”
