Anna M. Swope, 100, formerly of Fredericksburg, passed away on Saturday, July 9, 2022, at Providence Place in Pine Grove.

Born in Hamlin on May 25, 1922, she was the daughter of the late Jerry & Lillie Grimes Swope.

Anna attended the Germantown School of Nursing, and she received her BS in Nursing from the University of Pennsylvania in 1952. In 1958 she graduated with her Master’s in Public Health from Johns Hopkins University. During WW II, she was a member of the U.S. Army Nursing Corps and served as a Captain in Korea during the Korean Conflict. After the Korean Conflict, she worked for the U.S. Public Health Service in Washington, D.C., as a research nurse. She also worked at the Philadelphia for Community Nursing Services, where she worked with student nurses from Villanova and the University of PA. In 1964, she began her teaching career at the University of Miami, eventually becoming an Assistant Professor of Public Health Nursing. In 1968 she came home to PA and eventually became an Assistant Professor of Nursing at the University of PA, once again training nurses in the field of public health. From 1975-1983, she taught at West Chester University as an Assistant Professor of Nursing, and in 1983, she retired, making her home in Hershey to be near her family.

She is survived by her sisters, Nancy, wife of John Rhen of Jonestown and Frances Lutz of Hershey, and eleven nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her brother Eugene Swope, sisters Arlene Deck and brother-in-law Ray Deck, and Florence Gerhart.

A memorial service will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Friday, July 15, 2022, at the Kreamer & Lum Funeral Home & Crematory, Jonestown. A visitation will be held one hour prior to the service. Interment will follow at Hamlin Cemetery.
